Being included can make all the difference when you’re afraid you might not be able to keep up. In Zoie’s Magic Fins by Steve Nava and Angel Cintron, Zoie is a little pug who lives in Pugtonia with her older brother, Otis. While other pugs run, race, and splash, she gets around with the help of wheels. Every year, she watches the Great Creek Relay and hopes one day she’ll get the chance to join. That chance finally comes when Lucy and Nami show up at her house looking for another teammate. Zoie wants to say yes, but she isn’t sure how she’ll manage the swimming portion of the competition. Bear agrees to partner with her, and Otis is right there cheering her on. With encouragement all around, she decides to give the race a try. Could taking that first brave step help Zoie discover just how much she’s capable of achieving?

Zoie’s Magic Fins by Steve Nava and Angel Cintron was such a cute book, and I think kids will really connect with Zoie. I especially liked the message that doing something differently doesn’t mean you can’t participate. The writing is simple and encouraging, with just enough excitement surrounding the relay to keep young readers interested. I’d share this with my kindergarten class, and we’d have some great conversations about inclusion, courage, friendship, and the various ways people move through the world. Children could also draw their own “magic fins” or talk about something they’ve been nervous to try. The colorful illustrations are filled with adorable details, and I loved spotting all the dogs in the backgrounds. The photographs of the real pugs at the end are such a nice added touch. I tell my students every single day that they can do hard things, and that fits Zoie perfectly because she discovers that believing in herself can take her farther than she imagined. Young dog fans will especially enjoy this sweet adventure. This is a wonderful story with such a powerful lesson that belongs in schools, libraries, and homes everywhere.”
